Prostate Support

This mix is formulated to address the cause of prostate cancer, which is low testosterone levels. The prostate then converts testosterone to cancer promoting testosterone called DHT. The herbs are natural 5 alpha reductase inhibitors that mimic the drug Finasteride. 5 alpha reductase is an enzyme is involved in the conversion of testosterone to cancer promoting testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Just as Finasteride is prescribed for prostate cancer, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and male pattern baldness, so too is this tincture specific for these conditions. For male pattern baldness in women I recommend the Carahealth (PCOS) Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Tincture.

Saw palmetto Serenoa serrulata Saw palmetto is an aphrodisiac, anabolic agent, diuretic, expectorant, sedative, tonic, uterine tonic, endocrine agent, relaxant, sedative, tonic to the male reproductive system, particularly the prostate and reduces congestive catarrhal conditions of the respiratory system. It is indicated for chronic or sub-acute cystitis, prostatic hypertrophy, catarrh of the genito-urinary tract, testicular atrophy, sex hormone disorders. Specifically indicated in prostatic enlargement. Serenoa is a valuable remedy for male reproductive system, particularly the prostate gland. It is known as the 'plant catheter' because of its tonic effect on the neck of the bladder and on the prostate. It is prescribed for debilitated conditions of the male reproductive system such as testicular atrophy, low libido and impotence. It is also recommended for inflammation of the prostate and for enlarged prostate. Serenoa is also believed to be effective for functional infertility in women and to increase the supply of mother's milk. The fruit has a probable oestrogenic action, to stimulate breast enlargement in women. The berries have a toning and soothing influence on mucous membranes throughout the body as well as an expectorant property, making this a useful remedy for colds and catarrh. It has a traditional use for asthma and bronchitis. The berries are also used to treat urinary disorders and enuresis, and are of value in all infections of the urinary tract. Serenoa is reputed to be mildly sedative to the nervous system.

Nettle root Urtica dioica Nettle is a mild diuretic, astringent, tonic, haemostatic, dermatological agent; extracts are reported to have hypoglycaemic properties. The root is indicated in the symptomatic treatment of micturition disorders such as nocturia, pollakisuria, dysuria and urine retention and in benign prostatic hyperplasia. Urtica is rich in iron and vitamin C, making it a useful remedy in anaemia and other debilitated states, the presence of the vitamin C ensuring that the iron is properly absorbed. The herb has an important effect on the kidney and on fluid and uric acid excretion, so is of benefit in gout and other arthritic conditions, particularly if there is an element of anaemia. It has been shown experimentally to have both hypoglycaemic and hyperglycaemic properties, the hypoglycaemic component being ‘urticin’. Urtica is a natural 5 alpha reductase inhibitor, that is it prevents the conversion of testosterone to DHT a potent cancer causing testosterone. In a clinical trial, men with benign prostatic hypertrophy (Stages I and II) were treated with a dried standardised Urtica root extract for 20 weeks. A morphologically relevant effect on the prostate adenoma cells was found that may be due to competitive inhibition by the extract of the binding capacity of SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin). An increased binding capacity of SHBG to testosterone and dihydrotestosterone results in hyperplasia as a compensation for a decrease in hormones. Other clinical trials have reported improvements in urinary flow, and reduced urinary frequency, nocturia and residual urine after six months treatment.

Damiana Turnera diffusa /T. aphrodisiaca - It is a stimulant, mild diuretic, mild laxative, antidepressant, thymoleptic, urinary antiseptic, mild purgative, reputed aphrodisiac, testosteromimetic, euphoric and nervous restorative, stomachic. It is indicated for depression, nervous dyspepsia, atonic constipation, coital inadequacy, debility, lethargy. Specifically indicated in anxiety neurosis with a predominant sexual factor. Turnera is a valuable strengthening remedy for the nervous system. In particular, it has a stimulating and enhancing action on those functions related to the male reproductive system, especially where there is sexual inadequacy with a strong psychological or emotional element. The alkaloids are thought to have a testosteronal effect. It is of benefit in any debilitated condition of the central nervous system from anxiety and depression to neuralgia; and is used to contain genital herpes. Although considered to be a 'male' herb, it is not contraindicated for women with debilitated conditions.

Postage and packaging is 10 euro for 2 bottles to Ireland and UK. As a rough guide, I say for every year you have had a condition you need a month of treatment. All herbal tinctures come in 200ml bottles, taken at either 5ml 3 x day or 7 1/2 ml 2 x day. One bottle taken at this therapeutic dose will last 2 weeks. All herbs are either 1 in 1s or 1 in 2s meaning they are 1 part herb in 1 or 2 parts liquid respectively, as opposed to other herbs on the Irish and UK market which are either 1 in 3s or 1 in 5s. Therefore my tinctures are at least 2 x greater in strength and effectiveness. They are also organic or wildcrafted where available and I do not use endangered species.

Whilst the Carahealth Herbal Tincture range has been formulated to have no negative drug/herb interactions. If you are on medication, pregnant or breastfeeding, I recommend getting expert naturopathic advice on herbal contraindications and drug/herb interactions by booking a Skype consult. I accept no resposibility if you self-prescribe my herbs whilst taking medication or are pregnant or breastfeeding (although my Carahealth Partus Prep and Carahealth Birth Aid can be self-prescribed as they are specific for pregnancy). I can make a herbal tincture specifically for you that is safe in pregnancy, breastfeeding or if you are on medication. Or perhaps you are not on medications but would like a consult to ensure your self-prescription is correct and would like advice on diet, lifestyle and supplements.
