Weak peristaltic muscles
Recommended for atonic constipation, Atonic constipation has for its immediate cause sluggishness of the muscles of the intestine. Spastic constipation, on the other hand, is brought about by a spasm or constriction of the muscles. The herbs in this mix contain anthraquinone glycosides, which are compounds that act as natural stimulating laxatives. This is the principal ingredient in many commercial, over-the-counter laxatives sold in pharmacies. They have the ability to retrain a weak bowel by stimulating bowel wall muscles and peristalsis. They should not be used long term or in pregnancy.
Cascara sagrada / Buckthorn Rhamnus purshiana - Buckthorn is a stimulating laxative, hepatic and bitter, purgative and tonic. Buckthorn contains anthraquinone glycosides, a stimulating laxative. Cascara sagrada is widely used as a gentle laxative that restores tone to the bowel muscles and thus makes repeated doses unnecessary. It is considered suitable for delicate and elderly persons and is very useful in cases of chronic constipation. The bark also has tonic properties, promoting gastric digestion and appetite. As well as its uses as a laxative, it is taken internally in the treatment of digestive complaints, haemorrhoids, liver problems and jaundice. Cascara Sagrada may be used in chronic constipation as it encourages peristalsis and tones relaxed muscles of the digestive system. It should not be prescribed for pregnant or lactating women, or patients with intestinal obstruction.

The roots contain anthraquinones, which have a purgative effect, and also tannins and bitters, which have an opposite astringent effect. When taken in small doses, it acts as an astringent tonic to the digestive system, whilst larger doses act as a mild laxative. The root is taken internally in the treatment of chronic constipation, diarrhoea, liver and gall bladder complaints, haemorrhoids, menstrual problems and skin eruptions due to an accumulation of toxins and to lower cholesterol. In TCM, Da Huang is said to be bitter and cold and to enter the ehart, Large intestine, liver ansd stomach meridians. It is prescribed to purge accumulations and clear heat from blood and to invigorate the blood . It drains heat/damp and is indicated for Yang jaundice and is used topically for burns, hot skin, skin lesions (combine with Shi Gao). This remedy is not prescribed for pregnant or lactating women, nor for patients with intestinal obstruction.

Curled dock is a gentle and safe laxative, less powerful than rhubarb in its action so it is particularly useful in the treatment of mild constipation. The anthraquinones present have a markedly cathartic action on the bowel, but in this herb they act in a mild way, possible tempered by the tannin content. It is a gentle and safe laxative, less powerful than rhubarb. It is used internally in the treatment of constipation, diarrhoea, piles, bleeding of the lungs, various blood complaints and also chronic skin diseases. The plant has valuable cleansing properties and is useful for treating a wide range of skin problems such as psoriasis. The seed is very nourishing and body-building and is one of the most efficacious tonics in cases of physical debility caused by anaemia or by infectious diseases, especially where a nervous factor is involved. It is also used in the treatment of late-onset diabetes, poor digestion (especially in convalescence), insufficient lactation, painful menstruation, labour pains etc. The seeds freshen bad breath and restore a dulled sense of taste. Compounds extracted from the plant have shown cardiotonic, hypoglycaemic, diuretic, anti-inflammatory and hypotensive activity. One of its constituent alkaloids, called 'trigonelline', has shown potential for use in cancer therapy. The seed contains the saponin diosgenin, an important substance in the synthesis of oral contraceptives and sex hormones. Fenugreek acts as a carminative to lessen any colic associated with constipation. In Ayurvedic medicine, Methi (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is known to have anti-carcinogenic properties and reduce blood cholesterol levels. It is also used as a laxative. The seeds should not be prescribed medicinally for pregnant women since they can induce uterine contractions.
Fennel seed Foeniculum vulgare - Fennel is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, aromatic, carminative, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, galactogogue, hallucinogenic, circulatory stimulant and stomachic. Fennel has a long history of herbal use and is a commonly used household remedy, being useful in the treatment of a variety of complaints, especially those of the digestive system. An infusion is used in the treatment of indigestion, abdominal distension, stomach pains etc. Fennel is often added to purgatives in order to allay their tendency to cause gripe, and also to improve flavour. An infusion of the seeds is a safe and effective cure for wind in babies and to promote breast milk in mothers.

All herbs are either 1 in 1s or 1 in 2s meaning they are 1 part herb in 1 or 2 parts liquid respectively, as opposed to other herbs on the Irish and UK market which are either 1 in 3s or 1 in 5s. Therefore my tinctures are at least 2 x greater in strength and effectiveness. They are also organic or wildcrafted where available and I do not use endangered species.
