Carahealth Gout and Arthritis
Rheumatism is a non-specific good old fashioned Naturopathic term for medical problems affecting the joints and connective tissue. Carahealth Arthritis and Gout contains antirheumatic herbs that are alteratives (gradually restore the proper functioning of the whole body thus increasing health and vitality) and diuretics to assist in the removal of uric acid via the kidneys to reduce build-up of uric acid crystals in the joints that contribute to the gout pain. It also contans antiinflammatory and anodyne herbs help reduce the symptoms of swelling, pain and redness.
Sarsaparilla Smilax ornata – Sarsaparilla is anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, antiseptic and antipruritic. It is indicated for psoriasis and, chronic rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis and circulatory disorders such as erectile dysfunction(ED) and Raynauds ect. Sarsaparilla’s steroidal saponins exert an anti-inflammatory effect. It also has a diuretic action, flushing out chlorides and uric acid and therefore of benefit in gout and other rheumatic or arthritic conditions. It is also a blood cleanser used in the treatment of psoriasis and eczema. It is used as a tonic for sexual functioning and also as a rejuvenating tonic. It promotes blood flow to the genitals thereby increasing libido.
Wild yam Dioscorea villosa – Wild yam contains steroidal saponins, Wild yam is antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory (possibly steroidal), antirheumatic, mild diaphoretic, cholagogue, diuretic, expectorant, relaxant for smooth muscle, mild peripheral vasodilator. It is indicated for bilious colic, intestinal colic, functional colitis, colonic spasm, dysentery, diverticulitis, acute phase of rheumatoid arthritis, muscular rheumatism, rheumatic inflammatory conditions such as gout, cramps and intermittent claudication, cholecystitis, dysmenorrhoea, ovarian and uterine pain. Dioscorea has traditionally been used for easing menstrual cramps and for threatened miscarriage. Its antispasmodic action makes it good for flatulence and colic caused by muscle spasm. The herb also promotes the flow of bile and is sometimes used to ease the colic of gallstones. It's anti-inflammatory action is due to the steroidal saponins, and it is often used for the inflammatory stage of rheumatoid arthritis. It has a diuretic effect which, combined with its antispasmodic action, makes it useful in painful conditions of the urinary tract. Its antispasmodic action also makes it useful for treating poor circulation and neuralgia. It is given for intermittent claudication (pain in the calves caused by spasms in the blood vessels supplying the leg muscles). Dioscorea contains hormonal substances very similar to progesterone.
Devils claw Harpagophytum procumbens – Devils claw is anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, anodyne, digestive stimulant, sedative and hepatic. This valuable plant has been found effective in the treatment of some cases of arthritis. This action appears to be due to the presence of a glycoside called harpagoside that reduces inflammation in the joints. Unfortunately Devil's Claw is not always effective, but it is well worth considering in cases of arthritis where there is inflammation and pain. This plant also aids in liver and gall-bladder complaints.
Nettle leaf Urtica dioica – Nettle is an astringent, mild diuretic, tonic, haemostatic, dermatological agent and extracts are reported to have hypoglycaemic properties. It is indicated for rheumatic conditions, uterine haemorrhage, cutaneous eruptions, infantile and psychogenic eczema, epistaxis, melaena and specifically indicated in nervous eczema. The root is indicated in the symptomatic treatment of micturition disorders such as nocturia, pollakisuria, dysuria and urine retention and in benign prostatic hyperplasia. Urtica is rich in iron and vitamin C, making it a useful remedy in anaemia and other debilitated states, the presence of the vitamin C ensuring that the iron is properly absorbed. The herb has an important effect on the kidney and on fluid and uric acid excretion, so is of benefit in gout and other arthritic conditions, particularly if there is an element of anaemia. Urtica is also of benefit in chronic skin conditions such as eczema, helping to cleanse the body of accumulated toxins. Urtica is known to stimulate milk flow in nursing mothers, and is often used in this way by farmers for their stock. It has been shown experimentally to have both hypoglycaemic and hyperglycaemic properties, the hypoglycaemic component being ‘urticin’.
Bog bean Menyanthes trifoliata – Bog bean is anti-inflammatory, astringent, carminative, cathartic, deobstruent, digestive, diuretic, emetic, emmenagogue, febrifuge, hypnotic, stomachic and tonic. Bogbean is closely related to the gentians, which are famous bitter herbs used as a digestive and general body tonic. This plant can be used similarly, but it can irritate the digestive system of patients with gastric inflammation or infection. Bog bean is used to treast muscular weakness in M.E., chronic infections with debility and exhaustion, indigestion, anorexia and rheumatism. Given in small doses it imparts vigour to the stomach and aids digestion. It s also believed to be an effective remedy for rheumatoid arthritis, especially when this condition is associated with weakness, weight loss and lack of vitality. Bogbean is usually prescribed in combination with other herbs such as celery seed (Apium graveolens) and white willow (Salix alba). This plant should not be prescribed for patients with diarrhoea, dysentery or colitis. Excess doses cause vomiting.
Jamaica Dogwood Piscidia erythrina - Jamaica dogwood is a nervine, anodyne and anti-spasmodic. Jamaican Dogwood is a powerful sedative, used in its West Indian homeland as a fish poison. Whilst not being poisonous to humans, the given dosage level should not be exceeded. It is a powerful remedy for the treatment of painful conditions such as neuralgia and migraine. It can also be used in the relief of ovarian and uterine pain. Its main use is perhaps in insomnia where this is due to nervous tension or pain. It is indicated for inflammatory fever of any character, and in inflammatory rheumatism. In violent spasmodic cough it produces relief, In phthisis it controls the night cough and induces restful sleep. It has been highly lauded as a specific in whooping cough. It can provide pain relief in acute intestinal colic, gall-stone colic and renal colic, It has been used to lessen labour pains. Facial neuralgia seems particularly amenable to the action of piscidia. Ovarian neuralgia and pains due to straining on the uterine ligaments in displacement and tumour, are relieved by this remedy. It seems to have a satisfactory influence on all pelvic pain. In obstetrics it controls erratic pains and conduces to quiet and rest, and overcomes rigidity by its specific relaxing or antispasmodic influence, although it does not interfere with the normal uterine contractions. In the distress following the adjustment of fractured bones or reduction of dislocations, it is especially useful and satisfactory.

All herbal tinctures come in 200ml bottles, taken at either 5ml 3 x day or 7 1/2 ml 2 x day. One bottle taken at this therapeutic dose will last 2 weeks. All herbs are either 1 in 1s or 1 in 2s meaning they are 1 part herb in 1 or 2 parts liquid respectively, as opposed to other herbs on the Irish and UK market which are either 1 in 3s or 1 in 5s. Therefore my tinctures are at least 2 x greater in strength and effectiveness. They are also organic or wildcrafted where available and I do not use endangered species.
Whilst the Carahealth Herbal Tincture range has been formulated to have no negative drug/herb interactions.
