Male pattern baldness
Greying of hair
Hair loss and thinning hair can result from many causes including stress, poor nutrition (especially a Vitamin B and mineral deficiency), hormonal imbalance, certain prescription drugs, thyroid disease, cancer (more specifically treatment), and genetics. All of these hair loss conditions can occur in both men and women.
Hair loss from a western medical pathological perspective is due to excess Dihydrotesterone (DHT). This is produced from testosterone by an enzyme known as 5-alpha reductase. It has been found that increasing levels of DHT in hair follicles cause a reaction that reduces blood flow to the follicle and the impairs the growth cycle of hair. This results in follicle shrinkage and finer and shorter hairs, eventually the follicle dies and stops producing hair. Excess DHT is the primary contributing factor in male-pattern baldness and also benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and prostate cancer. The herbal mix contains Saw Palmetto, which acts like the drug Finasteride that is prescribed for baldness as it is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, both male pattern baldness and aging is due to what is known as kidney jing deficiency, also known as essence. The kidney jing or essence controls growth, development, sexual maturation and reproduction. Deficiency of Kidney Jing can thus result in such problems as impotence, chronic weak or sore lower back, weak knees, tinnitus, urinary incontinence, deafness, tooth loss, etc. (all signs of weak Kidney Qi and/or jing or yang.) Kidney Jing produces Marrow. In TCM, the brain is called the "Sea of Marrow". Therefore if Kidney Jing is weak, brain may be undernourished, leading to poor memory/concentration.
In TCM, as jing is nourished by blood and yin, baldness is also due to kidney yin deficiency and liver blood deficiency. The Carahealth Hair, Bones and Brain tincture is a Jing, Yin and Blood tonic. It contains He Shou Wu, which is the herb for hairlessness and to prevent greying of hair. Other herbs included are Sheng Di Huang (raw rheumamnia), which enhances the kidney Qi and Yin, Dang Gui to tonify Blood, combined with rosemary to improve blood circulation to the scalp, silica rich horsetail, to strengthen the hair and saw palmetto, a natural 5-alpha reductase to inhibitor to lower excess levels of DHT.
