This tincture contains a blend of herbs formulated to regulate ovulation and menstruation. These are combined with adaptogenic herbs to support adrenal function and improve energy and a traditional to promote libido in women. The tincture will act as a general female tonic also and is not used exclusively to promote fertility but can also be taken when feeling under par. Also contains an ancient Chinese herbal medicine formula called Xiao Yao San, (free & easy wanderer), a remedy for “liver Qi stasis”. It tonifies the liver blood and promotes the liver blood an Qi. Today, it is a commonly used herbal remedy for anxiety, irritability, stress, and depression due to the challenge of a daily life or premenstrual tension.

Milk thistle Silybum marinarum – Milk thistle is astringent, bitter, cholagogue, demulcent, diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic, emmenagogue, galactogogue, hepatic, stimulant, stomachic and tonic. Milk thislet is the trophorestorative of the liver. Milk Thistle can be used to increase the secretion and flow of bile from the liver and gall bladder and contains constituents, which protect liver cells from chemical damage. Silymarin, an extract from the seed, acts on the membranes of the liver cells preventing the entry of virus toxins and other toxic compounds and thus preventing damage to the cells from toxic chemicals and medications. It is used internally in the treatment of liver and gall bladder diseases, jaundice, cirrhosis, hepatitis and poisoning. It is indicated in skin complaints associated with a sluggish liver. As a galactogogue it specifically stimulates the flow of breast milk. Milk thistle also lowers cholesterol levels, reducing insulin resistance and reduces the growth of cancer cells in breast, cervical and prostate cancers. Regeneration of the liver is particularly important in the treatment of cancer since this disease is always characterised by a severely compromised and often partially destroyed liver.

Blue cohosh Caulophylum thalictroides – Blue cohosh is antispasmodic, antirheumatic, diuretic, emmenagogue and uterine tonic. It is an excellent uterine tonic that may be used in any situation where there is a weakness or loss of tone. It may be used at any time during pregnancy if there is a threat of miscarriage. Similarly, because of its anti-spasmodic action, it will ease false labour pains and dysmenorrhoea. However, when labour does ensue, the use of Blue Cohosh just before birth will help ensure an easy delivery, hence its traditional use as a partus preparatory. In all these cases it is a safe herb to use. As an emmenagogue it can be used to bring on a delayed or suppressed menstruation whilst ensuring that the pain that sometimes accompanies it is relieved.

Chaste Tree Vitex agnus cactus – Vitex is a uterine tonic dopaminergic, and prolactin inhibiting. Its primary function is to regulate hormone levels via the Hypothalamic Pituitary Ovarian (HPA) access. Increased levels of the hormone prolactin are often responsible for menstrual irregularities and premenstrual syndrome. Agnus-castus has been shown to inhibit its production and clinical trials have demonstrated that this can help regularise the menstrual cycle, improving PMS symptoms of breast tenderness, mood swings, fluid retention and headache. Vitex is used to treat acne with a hormonal cause. As a hormonal regulator it is specific for Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). For women who are trying to get pregnant, vitex balances oestrogen and progesterone levels thereby regulating ovulation and increasing chance of conception. The berries are considered a tonic herb for both the male and female reproductive systems.

Damiana Turnera diffusa / T. aphrodisiaca - Damiana is antidepressant, aphrodisiac, euphoric, mild diuretic, mild laxative, mild purgative, nervine, stimulant, stomachic, testosteromimetic, thymoleptic and urinary antiseptic. It is indicated for depression, nervous dyspepsia, atonic constipation, coital inadequacy, debility and lethargy. Specifically indicated in anxiety neurosis with a predominant sexual factor. Damiana is a valuable strengthening remedy for the nervous system. In particular, it has a stimulating and enhancing action on those functions related to the male reproductive system, especially where there is sexual inadequacy with a strong psychological or emotional element. The alkaloids are thought to have a testosteronal effect. It is of benefit in any debilitated condition of the central nervous system from anxiety and depression to neuralgia; and is used to contain genital herpes. Although considered to be a 'male' herb, it is not contraindicated for women with debilitated conditions.

Chai Hu柴胡. / Thorowax Bupleurum falcatum - Bupleurum is an antioxidant, antiseptic, antifungal, antiviral, immune stimulant, sedative and reduces cholesterol and triglyceride levels. In TCM, Bupleurum is said to be bitter, pungent and cool and to enter the gallbladder, liver, pericardium and san jiao channels. Bupleurum clears less yang disorders such as fever, chills, bitter taste, irritable, vomiting, treats liver Qi stagnation disorders such as vertigo, menstrual disorder, chest pain, bloating and tonifies spleen and stomach deficiency to treat disorders as prolapsed organs, diarrhoea and haemorrhoids. Bupleurum is used for fevers, flu, the common cold, cough, fatigue, headache, tinnitus, liver disorders, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), dysmenorrhoea, depression, anorexia, cancer, inflammation, lung congestion, malaria, angina, epilepsy, pain, muscle cramps, rheumatism, asthma, bronchitis, indigestion, ulcers, haemorrhoids, diarrhoea, constipation.

Dang Gui Angelica sinensis / Angelica archangelica– Dang gui is antispasmodic, carminative, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, stimulant, stomachic and tonic. In TCM, Dang Gui is said to be sweet, bitter, acrid and warm. It enters the liver, lung and kidney meridians. It is said to tonify the blood and regulates menses due to blood deficiency, invigorate/harmonise blood to disperse cold and alleviate pain, moistens intestines to unblocks bowels and reduce swellings, expel pus and generate flesh. Dang Gui is used for loss of appetite, gastrointestinal spasms, feeling of fullness, and flatulence. It is also used as part of a multi-ingredient preparation for treating premature ejaculation. Dang gui is combined with liguisticum, peony, and foxglove roots to create the famous formulas for building the Blood - Si Wu Tang. This formula is basic to treating amenorrhoea (missed periods) and dysmenorrhoea. Cinnamon twig is added if menstrual pain is due to cold uterus. This formula is recommended in pregnancy as it is extensively used in China and Japan and has been monitored in many large-scale clinical trials with pregnant women. Angelica has a long folk-history of use as a medicinal herb, in particular for the treatment of digestive disorders and problems with blood circulation. It stimulates blood flow to the peripheral parts of the body and so is of value in treating poor circulation.

White Peony Root / Bai Shao Paeonia lactiflora – Peony is an alterative, analgesic, anodyne, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, carminative, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, febrifuge, hypotensive, nervine, tonic, women's complaints. In TCM Peony is bitter, sour and cool. It enters the liver and spleen meridians. It is said to nourish blood and regulates menses due to blood deficiency, calm liver Yang to alleviate pain from constrained liver Qi or disharmony between the liver and the spleen due to liver Yang rising, such as cramping and spasms (limbs and abdomen), abdominal pain from dysentery, headache and dizziness and preserve Yin by adjusting Ying & Wei levels and is used to treat vaginal discharge and spermatorrhoea.. The most important ingredient medicinally in the root is paeoniflorin, which has been shown to have a strong antispasmodic effect. It also reduces blood pressure, reduces body temperature caused by fever and protects against stress ulcers. It is taken internally in the treatment of menstrual disorders, injuries, high blood pressure, pre-menstrual tension and liver disorders. Peony regulates menstrual problems due to blood deficiency (pale, lustreless complexion and nails), menstrual dysfunction, vaginal discharge, uterine bleeding, very common herb for gynecological disorders (Si Wu Tang / Four Substances Pills, which are used for treating impairment and deficiency of CHONG and REN channels, irregular menstruation, abdomen pain and pain around the navel, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, blood mass with pain at time, threatened abortion during pregnancy, retention of vaginal discharge after childbirth, abdominal mass, muscular rigidity and pain of the lower abdomen, attacks of chills and fever at time.

Ginger root Zingiber officinalis – Ginger is antiseptic, antiflatulent, antitussive, antiemetic, antiinflammatory, adjuvant, diaphoretic, carminative, expectorant, peripheral circulatory stimulant, rubefacient, spasmolytic and sialagogue. It is indicated for poor circulation, chilblains and cramp and nausea. In feverish conditions Zingiber's diaphoretic action promotes perspiration. As a carminative it promotes gastric secretion and is used in the treatment of dyspepsia, flatulence and colic. It is also a useful remedy in diarrhoea where there is no inflammation or due to spleen Qi deficiency. It is stimulant to the gastro-intestinal tract, increasing peristalsis and the tone of the intestinal muscle. As an anti-emetic it can be used in cases morning sickness. It is also said to be useful for suppressed menstruation. Extracts of ginger stimulate the vasomotor and respiratory centres. Warming digestive tonic, this remedy will increase hydrochloric acid and improve iron absorption. Ginger contains very potent anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols. These substances are believed to explain why so many people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis experience reductions in their pain levels and improvements in their mobility when they consume ginger regularly. Ginger extracts have been shown to have both antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour effects on cells. Gingerols, the main active components in ginger and the ones responsible for its distinctive flavour, may also inhibit the growth of human colorectal cancer cells. Lab experiments showed that gingerols, the active phytonutrients in ginger, kill ovarian cancer cells by inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death) and autophagocytosis (self-digestion). In TCM fresh ginger is said to be pungent and warm. It enters the lung, spleen and stomach meridians. It is said to release the exterior and disperse cold in middle jiao and is indicated for vomiting. It is also said to disperse cold phlegm in lungs and is indicated for chronic and acute cough. Ginger reduces toxicity of other herbs and adjusts ying and wei Qi for sweating without improvement.

Liquorice Glycyrrhiza glabra– Liquorice is alterative, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, demulcent, diuretic, emollient, expectorant, laxative, pectoral and tonic. It is a very sweet, moist, soothing herb that detoxifies and protects the liver and is also powerfully anti-inflammatory, being used in conditions as varied as arthritis and mouth ulcers. The constituents, glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhetinic acid, inhibit 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase . This inhibition blocks metabolism of prostaglandins E and F2 alpha and may be responsible for peptic ulcer healing. Liquorice has also been shown to have a hormonal effect similar to the ovarian hormone. Liquorice root is much used in cough medicines and also in the treatment of catarrhal infections of the urinary tract. It is taken internally in the treatment of Addison's disease, asthma, bronchitis, coughs, peptic ulcers, gastric and duodenal ulcers, arthritis, allergic complaints and following steroidal therapy. In TCM liquorice is said to be sweet, neutral and warm. It enters all 12 meridians but mainly the heart, lung, spleen and stomach meridians. Liquorice tonifies the spleen & stomach Qi and is used to treat digestive disorders, moisten the lungs and stops dry cough, tonifies the heart Qi to regulates pulse, clears heat & toxic fire, alleviates pain, stops spasms, harmonise & moderates the characteristics of other herbs and is an antidote for toxicity. It should be used in moderation and should not be prescribed for pregnant women or people with high blood pressure, kidney disease or taking digoxin-based medication. Prolonged usage raises the blood pressure and causes water retention.

Peppermint / Bo He Mentha piperata - Peppermint is antispasmodic, antiemetic, aromatic, bitter, carminative, cholagogue, diaphoretic, nervine and a peripheral vasodilator with a paradoxical cooling effect. It is indicated for intestinal colic, vomiting of pregnancy, flatulent dyspepsia, biliary disorders, common cold and dysmenorrhoea. Peppermint is specifically indicated in flatulent digestive pains, Mentha has a notable action on the lower bowel. It reduces nausea and is helpful in travel sickness. It promotes sweating in fevers and influenza. As a nervine it acts as a tonic, easing anxiety, tension and hysteria. In dysmenorrhoea it relieves the pain and associated tension. The pharmacological actions of Mentha are largely due to the volatile oil, which is carminative and a potent spasmolytic, acting locally to produce visceral muscle relaxation. The volatile oil acts as a mild anaesthetic to the mucous membrane of the stomach, relieving nausea and the desire to vomit. It reduces the tone of the cardiac sphincter and relaxes the gastro-oesophageal sphincter, allowing expulsion of air in flatulent dyspepsia. It relieves colonic spasm and bowel irritability and is specific for IBS. Chronic disease of the pancreas also responds well to peppermint, as do abnormal fermentation processes in the intestine, for example, when the bowel flora is abnormal. Menthol is bactericidal and antiparasitic. Dissolved in alcohol, it is effective against ringworm and other fungal infestations. It is also four times as powerful an antiseptic as phenol. The flavonoids contribute to the spasmolytic activity, and flavonoids and phenolic acids to the choleretic activity. In TCM Peppermint is pungent, aromatic and cool. It enters the lung and liver meridian. It is said to expel wind-heat to treat fever, headache, and cough, clears head and eyes and aids throat, sore throat, red eyes, headache, clears rashes and moves liver Qi stagnation to alleviate emotional, gynaecological disorders.

All herbs are 40 euro per bottle except for Carahealth Memory, Carahealth Antiageing, Carahealth Immune, Carahealth Male, Carahealth Adapt and Carahealth Anticancer, Carahealth Chemotherapy support and Carahealth Partus Prep which are 45 euro. Herbs are sold in a miniumum of 2 bottles at a time or one month supply (this can be a combination of 2 different tonics such as a Partus Prep and Birth Aid). This is because you will need a minimum of one month to see a real effect in chronic conditions, although if the herbal tonic is right for you, you should expect to see some improvement of your condition within the 2 weeks. All herbal tinctures come in 200ml bottles, taken at either 5ml 3 x day or 7 1/2 ml 2 x day. One bottle taken at this therapeutic dose will last 2 weeks. All herbs are either 1 in 1s or 1 in 2s meaning they are 1 part herb in 1 or 2 parts liquid respectively, as opposed to other herbs on the Irish and UK market which are either 1 in 3s or 1 in 5s. Therefore my tinctures are at least 2 x greater in strength and effectiveness. They are also organic or wildcrafted where available and I do not use endangered species.
