For a full explanation of the naturopathic causes of cancer see also Naturopathic Causes and Treatment of Cancer.
This mix contains blend of herbs formulated to treat the scientific causes of cancer, which are excess inflammation, genetic mutation, hyperproliferation of cells, increased angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels) and immune system suppression. The herbs are natural COX and LOX and IL6 inhibitors which prevent inflammation, and RTK inhibitors, which prevent formation of new blood vessels to a tumour. Carahealth Anticancer has also been formulated to prevent and treat hormone dependant cancers, including breast, endometrial, ovarian, colorectal and prostate cancer, by reducing aromatase and betaglucaronidase activity. In women, aromatase is an enzyme in fat cells that converts weak oestrogen into cancer promoting oestrogen. Betaglucaronidase, is a bowl enzyme involved in the reconjugation of weak oestrogen to cancer promoting oestrogen in the bowel. These enzymes are also implicated in the formation of prostate cancer.
Carahealth is formulated to treat and prevent tumour formation (any excess and overgrowth), both malignant and benign. Therefore is is also indicated for prevention and treatment of female conditions arising from hyperproliferation including endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, adenomyosis and hyperplasia. The herbs are also natural adaptogens and nervines, which increase resistance to stress, help to restore homeostasis and regulate the endocrine system. Traditional herbal actions included are alteratives (blood cleansers) and tonic herbs.
# Phytoeostrogens are protective against hormone dependant cancers. Some websites advise you to avoid phytoestrogens. This advie is simply ludicrous! Phytoestrogens are natures way of protecting against environmental cancer promoting xenoestrogens such as BPA in plastic bottles. They do this by blocking the oestrogen receptors and allowing for their removal by a healthy liver and bowel. For more information, please see also Oestrogen Dominance and Breast Cancer.
Red clover Trifolium pratense – Red clover is alterative, anti-inflammatory, dermatological agent, expectorant, mildly antispasmodic, relaxant sedative, diuretic and oestrogenic. Dock leaves are an excellent source of both vitamin A and protein, and are rich in iron and potassium When compared to spinach, curly dock has "... 1/3 more protein, iron, calcium, potassium, beta carotene and phosphorus." Plus, it has "... more than double the vitamin C (Steve Brill book p238)." Curled dock is a gentle and safe laxative, less powerful than rhubarb in its action so it is particularly useful in the treatment of mild constipation. The anthraquinones present have a markedly cathartic action on the bowel, but in this herb they act in a mild way, possible tempered by the tannin content. It is a gentle and safe laxative, less powerful than rhubarb. It is used internally in the treatment of constipation, diarrhoea, piles, bleeding of the lungs, various blood complaints and also chronic skin diseases. As a carminative it promotes gastric secretion and is used in the treatment of dyspepsia, flatulence and colic. It is also a useful remedy in diarrhoea where there is no inflammation or due to spleen Qi deficiency. It is stimulant to the gastro-intestinal tract, increasing peristalsis and the tone of the intestinal muscle. As an anti-emetic it can be used in cases morning sickness. It is also said to be useful for suppressed menstruation. Extracts of ginger stimulate the vasomotor and respiratory centres. Warming digestive tonic, this remedy will increase hydrochloric acid and improve iron absorption. Ginger contains very potent anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols. These substances are believed to explain why so many people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis experience reductions in their pain levels and improvements in their mobility when they consume ginger regularly. Ginger extracts have been shown to have both antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumour effects on cells. Gingerols, the main active components in ginger and the ones responsible for its distinctive flavour, may also inhibit the growth of human colorectal cancer cells. Lab experiments showed that gingerols, the active phytonutrients in ginger, kill ovarian cancer cells by inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death) and autophagocytosis (self-digestion). In TCM fresh ginger is said to be pungent and warm. It enters the lung, spleen and stomach meridians. It is said to release the exterior and disperse cold in middle jiao and is indicated for vomiting. It is also said to disperse cold phlegm in lungs and is indicated for chronic and acute cough. Ginger reduces toxicity of other herbs and adjusts ying and wei Qi for sweating without improvement.
Astragalus / Huang Qi Astragalus membranaceus - Astragalus is an adaptogen, antibacterial, anti-cancer, cardiotonic, diuretic, febrifuge, hypoglycaemic, hypotensive, pectoral, tonic, uterine tonic and vasodilator. It is particularly suited to young, physically active people, increasing stamina and endurance and improving resistance to the cold. For younger people it is superior to ginseng in this respect. Huang Qi is used especially for treatment of the kidneys and also to avoid senility. It is used in the treatment of cancer, prolapse of the uterus or anus, abscesses and chronic ulcers, chronic nephritis with oedema and proteinuria. Recent research in the West has shown that the root can increase the production of interferon and macrophages and thus help restore normal immune function in cancer patients. Patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy recover faster and live longer if given Huang Qi concurrently. It increases the production of blood cells. In TCM, astragalus is said to tonify spleen & lung Qi, raise Spleen & Stomach Qi and is used to treat prolapse, tonify Wei Qi to boost the immune system, tonify Qi & blood due to loss of blood to treat postpartum fever. Astragalus is specific for chronic cough.

Huang qin also clears stomach heat and dries damp and is indicated for diarrhoea, dysentery, thirst with no desire to drink, lin syndrome (urinary tract infections) and jaundice. It also clears heat and is used to stop bleeding, heamoptemesis, nosebleed and blood in stool. Huang qin is also said to clear heat and calm foetus and is prescribed for restless foetus due to heat. Finally Huang qin sedates liver yang and treats headache, irritability, red eyes bitter taste and halitosis. Radix scuttelaria has been found in clinical trials to inhibiting halitosis-correlated bacteria. There is also scientific evidence to support the use of Baical skullcap for allergies such as asthma, hay fever, eczema and nettle rash. This herb is used to treat fevers, coughs, and gastrointestinal infections that bring on diarrhoea. Modern research has also shown that baical skullcap is specifically anti-cancer as it is a natural RTK inhibitor. It is also a natural Cox inhibitor thereby reducing the inflammation that contributes to genetic mutation responsible for cancer formation. Specifically in regard to breast cancer, baical skullcap is a natural betaglucaronidase inhibitor, therefore inhibits the conversion of weak oestrogen to cancer promoting oestrogen in the bowel.
Mistletoe Viscum album – Mistletoe is antispasmodic, anticancer, cardiac tonic, diuretic, hypotensive, immunostimulant, nervine, relaxant, sedative and vasodilator. Mistletoe is specific for lowering blood pressure. It is indicated for hypertension, arteriosclerosis, nervous tachycardia, hypertensive headache, chorea and hysteria. Viscum slows and steadies excessive heart rate and dilates the arteries, thereby lowering blood pressure. It acts directly on the vagus nerve to reduce heart rate while strengthening the peripheral capillary walls. It also has a sedative and tonic effect on the nervous system. It is indicated particularly when high blood pressure is associated with nervous tension and a high pulse rate, as well as for symptoms of nervous tension and spasm. Its cardiotonic action is thought to be due to the lignans, while the hypotensive action is believed to be due to a choline derivative related to acetylcholine. Choline derivatives bring about parasympathetic stimulation and vasodilation. According to Grieves, Mistletoe a great reputation for curing the 'falling sickness' epilepsy - and other convulsive nervous disorders. As a reputed anticancer agent mistletoe is a natural RTK inhibitor thereby preventing tumour formation.
Barberry Berberis vulgaris – Barberry is antibacterial, antipruritic, antirheumatic, antiseptic, appetiser, astringent, anticancer, cholagogue, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, hepatic, laxative, ophthalmic, purgative, refrigerant, stomachic and tonic.
