Bugleweed Lycopus virginicus - Bugleweed is antidandruff, astringent, cardiac, hypoglycaemic, narcotic and sedative. Bugleweed is known as a specific remedy for hyperthryoidism. Bugleweed has sedative properties and is used primarily in modern herbalism to treat an overactive thyroid gland and the racing heartbeat that often accompanies this condition. It also slows and strengthens heart contractions. The plant has been shown to be of value in the treatment of hyperthyroidism, it is also used in the treatment of coughs, bleeding from the lungs and consumption, excessive menstruation etc. It should not be prescribed for pregnant women or patients with hypothyroidism. It is a useful relaxing nervine but in addition has a sometimes dramatic effect in reducing the symptom picture associated with hyperthyroid conditions.
Motherowort /Lions tail Leonurus cardiaca - Motherwort is sedative, nervine, antispasmodic, emmenagogue, mildly hypotensive, cardiac tonic, gentle uterine stimulant, mild stimulant to the womb, relaxant, carminative, diaphoretic. It is indicated for cardiac debility, tachycardia and amenorrhoea. Leonurus is an excellent heart tonic, and research has shown that it is able to calm palpitations, tachycardia and irregular heartbeats. It is a specific remedy for tachycardia caused by anxiety, and may be used in all heart conditions associated with anxiety and tension. The alkaloid leonurine produces central nervous depressant and hypotensive effects in animals, and stachydrine may also be involved. The glycosides have a short-term ability to lower blood pressure. Leonurus is valuable in the stimulation of suppressed or delayed menstruation, and to ease dysmenorrhoea, especially where there is anxiety or tension involved. It may be used to ease false labour pains, and the infusion, taken after childbirth, will help restore the uterus and reduce the risk of post-partum bleeding. The alkaloids encourage and ease uterine contractions. It is also helpful during the menopause. The infusion or diluted tincture may be used as a douche for vaginal infections and discharges. Other indications include diarrhoea. In Germany the plant is used as an adjuvant in treatment of an overactive thyroid gland.
Skullcap Scutellaria laterifolia – Scull cap is a nervine tonic, anti-spasmodic, hypotensive. Skullcap is perhaps the most widely relevant nervine available to us in the materia medica. It relaxes states of nervous tension whilst at the same time renewing and revivifying the central nervous system. It has a specific use in the treatment of seizure and hysterical states as well as epilepsy. It may be used in all exhausted or depressed conditions. It can be used with complete safety in the easing of pre-menstrual tension. Priest & Priest tell us that it is a " diffusive, stimulating & relaxing nervine - cerebral vasodilator and tropho restorative. Indicated for nervous irritation of the cerebrospinal nervous system" They give the following specific indications: functional nervous exhaustion, post febrile nervous weakness. Chorea, hysteria, agitation and epileptiform convulsions, insomnia, nightmares, restless sleep.
Hawthorn berry Cratageos oxycantha – Hawthorn berries are antispasmodic, astringent, cardiotonic, diuretic, hypotensive, sedative, tonic and vasodilatory. Hawthorn is the trophorestorative of the heart and possibly the most valuable tonic remedy for the cardiovascular system found in the plant kingdom. It is used mainly for treating disorders of the heart and circulation system, especially angina. It can be considered in most cardio-vascular disease and safe to use on any cardiovascular medication. Western herbalists consider it a 'food for the heart', it increases the blood flow to the heart muscles and restores normal heart beat. This effect is brought about by the presence of bioflavonoids in the fruit, these bioflavonoids are also strongly antioxidant, helping to prevent or reduce degeneration of the blood vessels. The fruits and flowers have a hypotensive effect as well as acting as a direct and mild heart tonic. They are especially indicated in the treatment of weak heart combined with high blood pressure, they are also used to treat a heart muscle weakened by age, for inflammation of the heart muscle, arteriosclerosis and for nervous heart problems. Prolonged use is necessary for the treatment to be efficacious. Hawthorn is combined with ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) to enhance poor memory, working by improving the blood supply to the brain.
