  • food additives

Recently there has been a lot of media attention on food additives and how they affect mood. Food additives are used to preserve, colour and flavour foods. Some are harmless, in fact some are even beneficial. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is used to preserve food and lecithin, which is involved in fat metabolism and the conduction of nerve impulses, is used as an emulsifier. Many however are not only harmful but some are actually carcinogenic, i.e. promote cancer. Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) conducted a study into people’s diets and found that Australian pre-schoolers are consuming almost double the amount of preservatives and additives than the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends. These are linked with asthma, eczema, hay fever and other allergic disorders and behavioural disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Irish kids have a similar diet.

  • Clarity; The ability to think and express ourselves clearly. Fresh mountain air and spring water have clarity. Clarity is also represented by the old saying, to be clear as a bell. Unfortunately, in the 21st century, it is hard for bells to be heard and difficult to find clear air and water, even in Far North Queensland. We too struggle with clarity for many reasons. From a naturopathic perspective, there are often physical factors that negatively impact our sense of clarity.Herbal medicine, nutritional supplementation, dietary and lifestyle approaches can treat this condition naturally, without the use of pharmacological drugs.

  • ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or AD/HD or ADD) is a developmental disorder. It is primarily characterised by "the co-existence of attentional problems and hyperactivity, with each behavior occurring infrequently alone" and symptoms starting before seven years of age.  ADHD management usually involves some combination of medications, behaviour modifications, lifestyle changes, and counselling. Its symptoms can be difficult to differentiate from other disorders, increasing the likelihood that the diagnosis of ADHD will be missed. Most clinicians have not received formal training in the assessment and treatment of ADHD, particularly in adult patients. However herbal medicine, nutritional supplementation, dietary and lifestyle approaches can treat this condition naturally, without the use of pharmacological drugs.

  • SAD

Living in the higher latitudes of the northern hemisphere I, like the locals, have learnt to view the weather in a different light. “At least it’s not bitterly cold,” we say. As we fully submerge ourselves into winter grey and indulge in hot toddies, hot ports and warm hearths, some of us may unfortunately feel like a storm cloud has descended on us. People will describe low moods, feeling foggy and physical symptoms that are worse in the damp weather such as lung and joint problems. Whilst a seasonal decline in energy and mood is normal for many of us, some of us may actually be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or the winter blues.

  • stress

Whilst occasional anxiety is normal, feeling anxious without reason is not. Persistent worrying thoughts that affect your day-to-day life may indicate you suffer from a generalized anxiety disorder. Symptoms may include irritability, impatience, restlessness, feeling tense or on edge or poor concentration. If your physical health is affected, stress may produce symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, jaw pain, difficulty falling or staying asleep (insomnia), dry mouth, fatigue, chest tightness, indigestion, bloating and excessive sweating. Certain nutritional deficiencies can cause severe anxiety. Herbal medicine, nutritional supplementation, dietary and lifestyle approaches can treat this condition naturally, without the use of pharmacological drugs.
