Boost your Natural Immunity to protect yourself from colds & flu this winter. flu experts predict nasty viruses are on the way, with various symptoms from colds & flu to bronchitis & tonsillitis.
Conventional medicine has no effective treatment against viral infections. Indeed antibiotics, have no effect on viruses. The flu vaccine offers little or no protection. The current Aussie flu H1N2 has the ability to mutate faster than vaccines.
According to the British Medical Journal (BMJ), Public Health England figures reveal the flu vaccine did not reduce the chance pensioners developing the illness at all last year (2017). The £160million spent last year on the winter public health campaign may have been a complete waste of money for those over 65! The live attenuated flu vaccine was also found to be ineffective among children 2 to 17, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2017. Also, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), researchers from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists studying flu vaccine in pregnancy, have found a possible link between miscarriage and the flu vaccine in women who received a certain version of the vaccine two years in a row. Experts are stressing research is at a preliminary stage but warn the possibility of association cannot be ignored. Whilst the Flu Vaccine may well be useless and carries unnecessary risks, natural medicine, on the other hand, has an arsenal to assist the body in its' recovery from viral infection with no side effects.
Our body has its own army called the immune system. During a fever the immune system is at its height of activity. Stop suppressing the fever with paracetamol. The immune complexes are working hardest when our temperature is between 38-40C. If the temperature is between these amounts don’t worry. If the temperature rises over 40C then you need to take it down. Again, before reaching for the paracetamol remember to try tepid baths, cool flannels and reduce layers. Rejoice in the common cold! When it is managed naturally it exercises our immune systems and protects us and our children from more serious diseases including autoimmune disease, inflammatory disease, allergic disease and cancer. Old school remedies that your grandmother wisely passed on to you
Bed-rest – It is so important. Lose the soldier on attitude.
Honey & lemon – Honey is antimicrobial and antibacterial. The antimicrobial activity in honeys is due to the enzymatic production of hydrogen peroxide. Lemons are rich in vitamin C a well-known anti-viral agent, especially to influenza virus. The honey must be cold extracted. Manuka honey is a proven anti-microbial - forget the lozenge. Have a teaspoon of manuka honey.
Chicken Soup/ Jewish penicillin – Grandma was right. Chicken soup is good for the cold. Dr. Stephen Rennard, a pulmonary expert at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, found evidence the soup contains anti-inflammatory properties that may help prevent a cold’s miserable side effects. It is important to maintain your fluids and chicken soup will help keep your strength up as well. Traditional stocks made from boiled bones are also very nutritious.
Hot Toddy – Lemon, honey, whiskey and cloves. The hot water of the toddy helps to relieve nasal congestion and the whiskey helps with sniffle issues, too. “The alcohol dilates blood vessels a little bit, and that makes it easier for your mucus membranes to deal with the infection,” Dr. William Schaffner, chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Good to help us big kids sleep.
Inhale – Olbas oil contains cajaput, which is a brochodilator to open the passages or eucalyptus oil is similar. Add half a cap to some hot water in a bowl. Place a tea towel over your head and gently inhale the vapour.
Gargle – Salty water or lemon juice for sore throats. Sage and thyme are a effective anti-microbials that can be made into a strong herbal tea infusion to gargle. Gargle spit; gargle swallow

Histamine is a natural chemical produced by the immune system, which increases blood flow to the affected area. Liquid leaks out of the blood vessels, making the mucous membranes lining the nose and throat to swell, and stimulating nearby glands to produce mucus causing symptoms such as itching, swelling, reddening, headaches, sneezing, running nose, itchy or watery eyes and breathing difficulties. This tincture is formulated for conditions affecting the upper respiratory tract such as hayfever, sinusitis and rhinitis. These herbs are natural antihistamines and mimic the action of over the counter antihistamines. Taken over time however, this mix will greatly improve the condition of your upper respiratory tract mucous membranes to prevent future attacks, saving you money on over the counter antihistamines. Safe to be used in conjunction with antihistamines although will reduce the need for medication. Medication will need to be adjusted accordingly.
